2023’s SHAKESPEARE ANNOUNCED - A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
The 2023 Shakespeare is one of the Bard’s most magical tales, A Midsummer Night's Dream. In an enchanted forest, a bunch of feuding faeries wreak havoc on four impassioned lovers and a troupe of wannabe actors. Natural and supernatural merge as misguided desires mix with magic spells. In a whimsical whirlwind of bewilderment and misadventure, they all discover that “The course of true love never did run smooth…”
Award-winning Shakespeare director Geoffrey Hyland also returns to Maynardville after the tremendous triumphs of Richard the Third (2019) and Twelfth Night (2017) to direct this comedy. With a large ensemble cast and costumes by the talented Michaeline Wessels, this production promises an action-packed, theatrical rollercoaster romp - fun for the whole family!
Catch the season 2 - 23 February 2023, and be sure to book early for the popular Valentine’s night performance.

SONGS OF SHAKESPEARE
Shakespeare’s back in the Park! Songs of Shakespeare is an operatic celebration of the iconic dramas of the great bard and the innate musicality of his timeless words. Over the centuries, great composers have aimed to do justice in music to the power of Shakespeare’s characters and their stories. Excerpts of favourite Shakespearean operatic adaptations, as well as some of the most spellbinding settings of his sonnets, will fill the magical air of the Maynardville Park. In this performance, the soloists and young artists of Cape Town Opera bring words to life with their glorious voices, under the musical direction of José Dias.
The Chorus Master for this performance will be Marvin Kemlle
Full Chorus details will be released at a later date.
SONGS OF SHAKESPEARE
This performance will include Cape Town Opera soloists Brittany Smith, Lukhanyo Moyake and Conroy Smith. It will also feature Young Artists Alida Stoman and Van Wyk Venter. The extraordinary José Dias will be at the piano.
CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET
SUMMERSNOW
Cape Town City Ballet is delighted to be back on the whimscial & wooded splendour of the Maynardville Open-Air Amphitheatre Stage.
SUMMERSNOW embraces the certainty of the seasons… the stark contrast of summer to winter. The enchanting double bill features the pastoral fantasy of Mikhail Fokine’s LES SYLPHIDES and Sir Frederick Ashton’s charming twilight skating scene, LES PATINEURS.
LES SYLPHIDES
Choreographer: Mikhail Fokine
Music: Frédéric Chopin and Alexander Glazunov
Les Sylphides demonstrates the qualities of the Romantic era, evoking imagination and other worldliness and has remained a popular staple of classical ballet repertoire worldwide. The Choreographer Michael Fokine created movements focused on lightness and precision giving the ballet its signature look.
LES PATINEURSn
Choreographer: Frederick Ashton
Music: Giacomo Meyerbeer
The ballet is set in a park on a winter evening, the dancers portraying skaters enjoying themselves (with a few mishaps) on a frozen lake, and comprises a sequence of divertissements featuring a cast of fifteen, including a pas de deux couple, a Blue Boy, Blue Girls, Red Girls and an ensemble of four couples.
