AUGUST’S THOUGHT:
How we identify what works - Fighting for change in SA’s schools

Education is a lifeline offering an unparalleled opportunity to change lives, communities, and countries.

Despite sharing the challenges of South Africa’s unequal and broken education system - over-crowded classrooms, hungry children and lack of resources - there are some schools that beat the odds.

At August’s THINK.Thursday, we’ll be screening The Good Ones, a new film by distinguished filmmaker, Molly Blank. The film will be followed by a short talk and discussion.

AUGUST’S THOUGHT LEADER

Molly Blank is a documentary filmmaker who has spent the last ten years working primarily in South Africa, exploring issues of education, youth, race, and community. Her previous films include Testing Hope: Grade 12 in the new South Africa and Where Do I Stand?.

In 2014, Molly and Professor Jonathan Jansen published their book How To Fix South Africa’s Schools. The book examines South African schools that work, often in spite of adverse conditions and draws out the practical strategies that make them successful. It includes a 19-part series of short films that profile successful schools across the country.  John Maytham, presenter at Cape Talk called it, “Inspirational film-making at its very best”. Simple stories of hope being realized, dreams being made real, and told very powerfully. There is hope for the education system in South Africa."

Her most recent film which will be screened on the evening, The Good Ones, tells the stories of these schools and illuminates how schools can empower students, transform their futures and enable them to find their place in the outside world.

THINK.Thursday is a bi-monthly meeting to have energised conversations for #PositiveChange. Led by a thought leader on a topic related to social, environmental, or behavioural change, the evening will be led by a thought leader, following by a relaxed discussion. It is a chance to meet like-minded individuals to exchange and challenge ideas, and collaborate.
