The Cape Town Mini Maker Faire 2016

Fri Aug 26, 14:00 - Sun Aug 28, 18:00

Cape Town Science Centre

ABOUT

Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker Movement.  It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning.

Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers.  They are of all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community. The original Maker Faire event was held in San Mateo, California and in 2016 celebrated its eleventh annual show with some 1200+ makers and 150,000 people in attendance. World Maker Faire New York, the other flagship event, has grown in five years to 900+ makers and 90,000 attendees.

Thirty-two other larger scale Maker Faires occur in cities around the world—Detroit, Atlanta, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, and Shenzhen to name a few— and over 150 community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires are now being produced around the United States and the world.

Your ticket gives you access to the event, as well as the wonders of the Cape Town Science Centre.

Please use public transportation or consider trying Uber for a fun new experience. Parking in the area is challenging, but there are 200 bays available in the Groote Schuur complex.

Cape Town Mini Maker Faire is independently organized and operated under license from Maker Media, Inc.

10h30Simon Ratcliffe
South Africa’s “Barefoot Astronomer”, makes sense of the SKA, a mega-science project, that which will push the limits of engineering and scientific endeavour over the coming decades.

Building the SKA will require the development of cutting edge technology and innovation, including the design of the world’s fastest supercomputers to process data at rates greater than the current global internet traffic. The SKA will use thousands of radio antennas, with different antenna technologies. This will enable astronomers to probe the universe in unprecedented detail. The SKA project is an international effort comprising organizations from ten countries. In addition, a further 100 or so organizations from 20 countries have been participating in the design and development. Simon and his team have also become very adept at hacking equipment to manufacture products that didn’t exist before…

When Making Saves Lives: The maker revolution is massively empowering for those who build things for themselves. But what happens when a maker meets serious researchers? What possibilities does this open up? In this short talk Samuel Ginsberg will discuss what happens when his hands-on maker skills get used in the course of his research as an academic at the University of Cape Town. This short talk will take maker skills into the world of the poorest South Africans, into the fight against disease and inside the human body.

12h30 - George Gabriel, Culture Design
As entrepreneurs and business leaders, it is our job to transform new ideas into reality. One of the many challenges in achieving our goals is to find the right balance between the needs of the individual, and the development of the organization. This becomes incredibly important as we strategically plan their organization’s growth and scale. The question is, are we doing it consciously? Alongside the amazing changes brought about by technology, we have also had major leaps in our research on human development and consciousness, developing new models and practices to improve personal and team performance.
