The Cape Town Youth Choir

ABOUT

The much-acclaimed Cape Town Youth Choir (CTYC) will be performing in the Genadendal Moravian Church on 22 October at 15:00, during Greyton’s famous Rose and Garden Fair. 

More recent highlights of the CTYC include an a cappella concert in Carnegie Hall (NYC) in 2017, a national television broadcast of Handel’s Messiah in 2018, the Grand Prix prize at the 17th “Antonio Vivaldi Choir Competition” in Karpenissi, Greece in 2019 as well both the ‘Publikumspreis’ (Public Choice Prize) as well as the Günther-Mittergradnegger prize for the best performance of a contemporary work at the chamber choir competition in Spittal an der Drau in 2019. 

The CTYC visited Bavaria, Germany during the first week of June 2022. This was the choir's first post-COVID tour and in the immortal words of Barney Stinson, it was "legendary". They took part in the Marktoberdorf International Choir Competition, competing against choirs from various European countries, the USA, and Indonesia. The Choir was placed second in the Mixed Voice category and shared the third place overall at the competition. They also won the Public Choice Award at this competition, thanks to the votes cast by the public following the competition. 

Apart from the competition, the CTYC also performed six concerts in the space of a week. The highlights were performing on the main stage of the Oberammergau Passion Play and in the Stiftskirche in Stuttgart.

Formed in 1997, the choir’s mission is to provide an opportunity for young South Africans to sing in a choir of the highest international standards and to provide a moving musical experience for its audiences. We believe that music speaks directly to the heart; it restores the soul and lifts the spirit!

They practice in the Cape Town City Centre and membership of the choir is open to anyone who has passed an audition and is able to attend the rehearsals. Currently, the 36-voice ensemble consists of members between the ages of 18 and 35 years old.
