ABOUT
Born in Tembisa, Kabelo Boy Mokhatla started his musical journey at the
Moses Molelekwa Arts Foundation. He is a drummer, composer, artist,
and arranger.
Kabelo is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree (Jazz
Percussion) at the Manhattan School of Music. He is one of the Hugh
Masekela Heritage Scholarship recipients 2020-2021, studying with the
renowned American jazz drummer, educator, bandleader, and composer
Kendrick Scott.
Kabelo has worked with national and internationally acclaimed
musicians and has played in many stages: The Northern Cadence
International Jazz Series, Jazz at the Lincoln Center (Dizzy’s Club Coca
Cola), Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival, Standard Bank National Youth
Jazz festival, Imbokodo Jazz Festival, Ekurhuleni Jazz Jamboree, and Jazz
Jol, to name a few. He has played alongside Afrika Mkhize, Ernest
Dawkins (US), Khaya Mahlangu, Bheki Khoza, Salim Washington (US/SA),
and Ingrid Jenson (Canada/US), to name a few.
In 2019 he was selected for the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band
conducted by the renowned pianist Afrika Mkhize.
BRATHEW VAN SCHALKWYK
Cape Town based pianist/composer/creative with a deep love for the philosophy and sonics of Jazz in addition to an array of music styles including Marabi, Soul, Samba, Langarm , Ghoema, Maskandi, Hip-Hop, 90s R&B and Western Classical musics.
Exposed to the Cape Town music scene at the age of 16, he has performed at various venues around the Western Cape including Cape Town Jazzathon, Cape Town International Jazz Festival as well as Artscape Youth Jazz Festival to name a few and has also travelled abroad to perform at Arcevia Jazz Festival (Ancona, Italy). He currently holds a Bachelor’s Degree and Post-Graduate Diploma in Music from the University of Cape Town. Moreover, he is actively involved in the Cape Town music scene and also facilitates jam sessions
