Paganini to Piazzolla 2.0

Tue Oct 18, 18:30 - Tue Oct 18, 20:00

NWU School of Music & Conservatory Hall

ABOUT

Renowned violinist and senior lecturer in violin and viola at Nelson Mandela University David Bester (violin) join forces with leading South African-based guitarist and recent SAMA winner James Grace (guitar) in From Paganini to Piazzolla 2.0.

Appearing live together for the first time at NWU, Bester and Grace blend the sounds of bowed and plucked strings together in an exciting programme offering a dazzling display of virtuosity and refined musicianship.

Central to the programme is Piazzolla’s four-movement L’Histoire du tango (History of the Tango), an evocative journey depicting the development of the tango as a dance form during the 20th Century. Originally composed for flute and guitar, the violin offers a fresh perspective and distinctive sound in this intense and flavourful work.

Also featured is one of Paganini’s early Sonatas for violin and guitar in A Major, in addition to a selection of popular Brazilian folk melodies by Celso Machado.
