About Melorie Jane
Growing up in Pretoria, Melorie Jane started the afro-funk, jazz band called ALL the MORE, in 2012. The group performed at venues such as Hard Rock Café Menlyn, Marais Street Acoustics and +27 Café. The group broke up in 2017 when Melorie Jane moved to Franschhoek, where she started performing mostly under her own name in various jazz, funk and contemporary jazz set-ups.
She released her debut single 'till the morning comes in 2017 and her EP Different View, performed by her quintet, in 2018. Melorie completed her Bachelor's degree in music at the University of Pretoria and graduated with her Masters in Music Performance (specializing in jazz composition and piano performance) at the University of Stellenbosch in 2021. Melorie Jane currently performs in and around Cape Town, and has featured at events such as the 2020 Woordfees at the Spier amphitheater, as part of the University of Stellenbosch Jazz band who performed with Anna Davel, Gloria Bosman and Lana Crowster. She has also opened the stage for CODA Africa and performed at various other prestigious venues in the area, and performed with her quintet as a student-act at the DSG Auditorium at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in 2019.
She developed a passion for South African jazz, inspired by the music of Bheki Mseleku, Tutu Puoane, Carlo Mombelli, Kyle Shepherd, Bokani Dyer and Nduduzo Makhathini, and the contemporary styles of international artists such as Esbjörn Svenssen, Amina Figarova, Snarky Puppy, The Bad Plus and Avishai Cohen.

Latest release, "More or Less"
South African, female jazz artist, Melorie Jane, is releasing her debut album, 'More or Less', the third release for the artist in 2021, following two singles, earlier this year containing elements of contemporary jazz and neo-soul.
The brand-new addition, 'More or Less' features Melorie Jane's jazz quintet with artists Neo Mathebula on trumpet, Jed Petersen on tenor saxophone, Alex Mayers on bass guitar and Lilavan Gangen on drums, in addition to Melorie Jane on piano and vocals and guest drummer Jarryd West on a single track.
The album, which features jazz music in a contemporary approach, deals with themes such as the artist's process of finding and expressing one's idea of home and the self. Pieces such as Mr. Tswai and Sense of Home, according to the composer, are snapshots of experience, and are influenced from her interest South African jazz composers such as Kyle Shepherd, Carlo Mombelli and Bheki Mseleku. Other pieces, such as New Day reference her interest in international contemporary jazz bands, such as Snarky Puppy and The Bad Plus.
'I am inspired by young musicians who are pushing the boundaries of music. I wrote this album to introduce my own style, but also to pay tribute to those who have paved the road before us', Melorie Jane mentions, when reflecting about her musical influences.
Amina, a previously released single, is included as the final track of the album, paying tribute to female jazz artist Amina Figarova, who is an important compositional influence and rolemodel for Melorie Jane.
