Microplastics In Our Water

Sat Jul 2, 13:00 - Sat Jul 2, 14:00

Kloofendal Nature Reserve

ABOUT

A recent study by OrbMedia analyzed 159 water samples, sourced from both tap water and bottled water in 14 countries, and found that over 80% of all samples contained tiny plastic particles, with an average of 4.34 plastic particles per liter of water. Its official, microplastics are in our drinking water.

In this 1 hour presentation, Dr Finkbeiner will discuss microplastics in our drinking water, how they got there and the impact that these plastics have on the environment and our health.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided before the event and after the event. Please wear something warm, as the Ecological Centre is rather chilly during winter.

Meet at the Ecological Centre at least 15 minutes before the event. This event will go ahead regardless of the weather. For queries, please contact the Friends of Kloofendal (phone, WhatsApp) on 079 693-5608. For more information about Kloofendal Nature Reserve, please go to www.kloofendalfriends.org.za

Dr Pascal Finkbeiner

Pascal Finkbeiner graduated in Environmental Chemistry from Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany. He then moved to the UK to pursue his PhD at Cranfield University. In his research he investigated the removal of natural organic matter by ion exchange for drinking water production. After graduation he remained at the Cranfield Water Science Institute as a research fellow, where his research addressed the fate and removal of microplastics in the drinking water treatment process. At the beginning of this year Pascal joined UNISA as a Post-doctoral fellow and is currently working on the removal of micro-pollutants from water.
