East London Museum

ABOUT

Joy of Books is our inaugural two-day local Book Festival of literary fun for the whole family. Our 'Treasure Island in the Garden' and 'Tangled Fairytales' immersive theatre shows will keep young and old entertained, while adults can enjoy wine tasting, bespoke stalls, talks and book readings by local authors and the launch of Hayibo! A Prose and Poetry Collection compiled by the Emonti writers. There will also be a writing competition for scholars of various ages with awesome prizes as well as other prizes and surprises! Festival-goers are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book characters.

Joy of Books started as a legacy project with profits from the event being used to buy books for local schools in memory of those we have lost. Each book will be gifted on behalf of Joy of Books and those who have contributed. Please bring any books that you would like to donate to our book donations stall so we can keep growing this meaningful legacy.

Tangled Fairytales and Treasure Island in the Garden – Immersive Theatre shows

Please join us for these family-friendly interactive shows, included in your ticket price for Joy of Books Festival!

(The shows are 30 minutes – 45 minutes each in length.)

Tangled Fairytales: 9.30am / 10.30 / 11.30 / 12.30 (in the hall)

Treasure Island in the Garden: 10.15am / 11.15 / 12.15 / 13.15 (in the garden)

We are using immersive theatre to bring stories to life and get kids (and adults) to climb into the narratives, helping the characters along the way! These two shows are family friendly and suitable for all ages. We chose two classics from literature to adapt: Treasure Island with all its piratey fun! And Tangled Fairytales, which is a uniquely scrambled mix of Cinderella, Rapunzel and The Princess and the Frog, for kids to untangle! The two shows will run throughout the two-day festival and audience members can choose to participate as much as they like, or just sit back, relax and enjoy. Simply arrive at the venue in time for the show and let your inner child delight!
