PERFORMERS
Pietermaritzburg Caledonian Society Pipe Band was started in 1918 as a living memorial to the fallen in the First World War.
We meet on Monday nights at our band room in Adrian Rd Pietermaritzburg from 7:15pm to 9:15pm for our weekly band practice. We are always looking to teach people to play pipes as well as drums and welcome any interest you may have in our band.
The Durban Caledonian Society Pipe Band, or "Durban Callies PB" for short, consists entirely of volunteers who do it for the love of music and camaraderie. The band competes annually in the South African Pipe Band Championships, consisting of 3 Highland Gatherings held around the country, and then usually put on an end-of-year concert titled "Carols & Kilts". We're thoroughly looking forward to joining forces with our neighbours the PMB Callies PB this month to bring you the Sounds of Scotland!
In addition to the pipes and drums, we will be accompanied on this occasion by Cassie Rae on vocals, Nicholas Mowbray on keys, and Wayne Smythe on bass guitar.
The name "Forest Weaver" comes from a mustard-tummied songbird which flits from branch to branch in South African indigenous forests. This bird is known for singing crystal clear, piercingly high notes that stand out above the usual orchestra of birdsong, despite its small stature.
Emma Farquharson hails from Hilton in KwaZulu-Natal. She has a rich multi-genre singing background, having spent her childhood & teens combing through her parents diverse CD collections & singing in choirs both local & provincial / national. Her musical qualifications and credentials are both impressive and extensive, and she and her piano accompanist Ilse Myburgh are sure to be a highlight of our show.
Melissa and Samantha have competed with great success at the highest level in both Irish and Highland dancing. They both hold an international Irish dance teaching qualification. Dancing together as Celtic Heartbeat, they have performed in many productions, including Last Night of the Proms in Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Johannesburg, and the well-known proudly-Durban show Shall We Dance, plus many more concerts, ceilidhs, highland gatherings and even weddings.
