Young Artists Concert: Clarinet and Piano Recital

Join Cameron Williams and Albie van Schalkwyk for a recital of clarinet and piano music showcasing the broad and varied repertoire for the combination. From masterpieces of the romantic period and the twentieth century through to neoclassicism and jazz, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The programme includes works by Reger, Schumann, Berg, Poulenc and Kovács.

 

Cameron Williams completed his Bachelor of Music and BMus Honours degrees cum laude at Stellenbosch University in 2019 and 2021 respectively. He has won first prizes in, amongst others, the National Youth Music, UNISA Scholarship, and ATKV Muziq competitions and was the first runner-up in the 2019 Fine Music Radio Bursary and Mabel Quick Overseas Bursary competitions. Cameron is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at the Kunstuniversität Graz in Austria where he is a clarinettist with Live Music Now Styria, and has also played in the Ensemble Geräuschkulisse orchestra in Hannover, Germany. When he is not practising, Cameron is a director of the Cape Chamber Music Collective, a group which aims to put on high-quality chamber music concerts all around the Cape. Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards funding his education.

 

Albie van Schalkwyk is one of the leading chamber musicians and accompanists in South Africa. He has performed as soloist with SA orchestras, performed solo recitals, given master classes for singers and accompanists, worked as a music producer for the SABC, and arranged music for various combinations. In 2009 the SA Academy of Arts and Sciences awarded him the Huberte Rupert Prize for his contribution to ensemble playing and teaching over more than 30 years. He completed his PhD in Music at the University of the Free State in 2012. Albie retired from his post as Associate Professor in Piano and Chamber Music at the SA College of Music, University of Cape Town, at the end of 2017 to his own private studio, the Musicumbrella Piano Studio.

 

The concert on Sunday 17 July 2022 starts at 3pm and will last approximately 2 hours. Tickets are R200 per person and include selected wines from Banhoek’s renowned Oldenburg Wine Estate and finger food at interval. Student / learner tickets are offered at R50 per concert at the door. Guests are invited to come early or stay after the concert to enjoy the tranquility of the Old Nectar gardens.
