Lectures

Ceramic artists & clay lovers, join us for a unique opportunity to attend a pair of lectures & a crit by prize-winning (visiting) international curator, Dr Wendy Gers. The lectures will focus on the most significant current trends in ceramics & are guaranteed to inspire! Both lectures are followed by Q&A sessions. 


Art Crit

This exclusive opportunity for a crit by Dr Wendy Gers is limited to 12 artists. Artists  are required to submit 5-7 recent images of their work in advance. These will be reviewed by Dr Gers. Participating artist will receive an evaluation of their work & constructive feedback from Dr Gers & fellow participants. 

 


PROGRAM


10:00-11:00 Current trends in international ceramics - sculpture, vessels, performative and multi-media practices.

11:20-12:00 Sustainability & ceramics. Dr Gers will share research in progress for an upcoming exhibition series & publication on this topic. 

12:00-13:00 Lunch – wholesome gourmet meal prepared by professional chef, artist & culinary historian, Melissa Barker.

13:00-16:00 Exclusive individual critique of your work by Dr Wendy Gers. (Max 12 people).


BRIEF BIO


  • Wendy Gers (b. Paarl, South Africa) is a curator and ceramics consultant. She is Curator of Modern and Contemporary Ceramics at Princessehof National Ceramics Museum (Netherlands) and founder of Ceramics Coach and Clean Green Ceramics.
  • She has directed exhibitions in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, including Biennales in China and Taiwan. Her Biennales have been viewed by over 1 million visitors.
  • Recent publications include Scorched Earth: A Century of Southern African Ceramics (2015), Cont{r}act Earth: Catalogue of the First Central China International Ceramics Biennale (2017), Terra Nova: Catalogue of the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale (2014) and a chapter in The Ceramics Reader (2017).
  • Gers is the recipient of a BA in Art History and Classical Civilization; Advanced University Diploma in Information Studies, MA in History of Art (cum laude) from University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and PhD from the University of Sunderland, UK.
