Understanding POPI - Data Protection and Compliance for Marketers

South African citizens' right to privacy is provided for in our soon to be enacted Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI), an Act that will have far-reaching implications for the digital media, marketing and advertising sector.

Digital marketing agencies have long been collecting and using personal data. The industry's increasing reliance on such data and the trust placed in agencies to secure their clients' personal data requires serious consideration of the approaches to data collecting and processing.

A working understanding of such information and POPI is critical to mitigate risks to the organisation. Presented by leading ICT lawyers, this half-day workshop provides an overview of POPI as well as compliance approaches, policies and procedures.

Your presenter: Denise Fouche

Having worked in the media, publishing and advertising sectors, Denise decided to take her passion for media to the next level. Intrigued by the convergence of the media and the law, she completed her LLB with a view to working in the digital media and legal environments. 

While in private practice, Denise advised on intellectual property law and contract law. During her time with PwC's Technology and Innovation Law team she advised on social media law, website law, consumber protection law, electronic identity law and conducted regulatory assessments for large retailers.

She advises tech start-ups to large firms on the implications of technology law and compliance.

As a member of the IAB's Regulatory Affairs Council, Denise advises on technology legal challenges facing IAB members. Denise edits LegalBrief, an IAB publication dedicated to the law impacting its members.
