Neo Muyanga is a composer, sound artist and librettist who tours widely as a solo performer, band leader and choral conductor. He composes chorus songs, pop and electronic music as well as chamber opera.
Muyanga co-founded the Pan African Space Station – an experimental African music and art cyber portal (with publisher/editor, Ntone Edjabe) in 2008. A decade earlier he co-formed the acoustic soul duo, Blk Sonshine (with Masauko Chipembere) in 1996.
His large-scale compositions and site-specific installations include the opera, How Anansi freed the stories of the world (premiered at the Dutch national Opera and Ballet, Amsterdam, in 2021); the procession, A Maze in Grace (which opened the Bienal de Arte de São Paolo, Brazil, in 2020); the oratorio, MakedbA (premiered at the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival in 2019); the opera, Heart of Redness (co-produced by Magnet Theatre and Cape town Opera at the Fugard Theatre in 2015); and the chamber music plays, Flower of Shembe (2012), and Memory of How it Feels (2010). Muyanga was composer-in-residence at the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival (2017) and the National Arts Festival of South Africa (2017) and is an alumnus of the Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD (2016). He was artist-in-residence jointly at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (WISER) and the Humanities Research Institute of the University of California in Irvine (2014); at the Centre for Humanities Research of the University of the Western Cape (2013); and the Drama School of the University of Cape Town (2007).
Xhanti Nokwali’s music comes from his most vulnerable space where he uses his voice and writing to express his emotions as well as try to understand where he comes from in terms of culture and the identity of his people
