Family Ties – Sir Herbert Baker, Owletts and Villa Arcadia

Sun Apr 10, 14:00 - Sun Apr 10, 16:30

Villa Arcadia

ABOUT

We are honoured to have Camilla Baker, great-granddaughter of Sir Herbert Baker, join us for an exclusive illustrated talk about her illustrious forebear and his home at Owletts in Kent.

Camilla still lives on the Owletts property where Baker grew up and where he returned after his years in South Africa and India. Baker is, of course, renowned as the architect behind some of South Africa’s most iconic structures such as the Union Buildings, St. John’s School, the Rhodes Memorial in Cape Town, Stone House and many more.

After tea and scones there will be a tour of Villa Arcadia, the lovely heritage home designed by Baker for Lionel and Florence Phillips. Now the cherished centre for Hollard Insurance, it’s currently used for functions and has a number of rather special meeting rooms celebrating various South African artists.

In addition to this unique opportunity to meet Camilla, access to Villa Arcadia is a rare privilege and numbers are limited so book soon.

Please note: since this will be an indoor event, proof of vaccination will need to be shown at the door, and the wearing of masks is mandatory.

Meeting place: drive into the main entrance to Hollard Insurance and proceed along the spacious driveway up to the Villa itself. We will meet you in the Music room.
