Madala Kunene & Lerato Lichaba Live in Concert

Sun Apr 3, 14:00 - Sun Apr 3, 17:30

House of Kuumba, Durban

ABOUT

Madala Kunene and Lerato Lichaba bring you a sonic guitar experience showcasing Madalaline Music.

The legendary Madala Kunene is a guitarist, singer, songwriter, composer and musical anthropologist whose native rhythms cross the musical lines between jazz and Zulu folk blues. Affectionately known as ‘Bafo’ - which means brother; his sound has become a staple diet on music stages across South Africa for well over five decades and his dexterity on the six string has earned him the title of “King Of The Zulu Guitar”.

His friend in music, Lerato Lichaba, is a self-taught guitarist, composer, arranger and founder of the prolific ensemble, Urban Village and non-profit creative hub, House of Kuumba. Lerato’s music style is inspired by his life experiences and how different cultures and traditions blend in the language of his music.

It was only fitting that the two who have been performing together since 2015, and who worked together during the Corners of Forgotten Theories Concert Series, and the Forest Jam Groove Orchestra tour, have come to work together to continue crafting a new music language that will take listeners to a forgotten yet familiar place.

The show features vinyl DJs KBZL and DICE.

KBZL is pronounced KhaBaZeLa. He is a record collector who hails from the red-brick city of Maritzburg and he is also an all round humble young man. uKhabazela is currently based in DBN RSA amidst the chaos of iGqom, AmaPiano, uBanana and the revered Bunny chow wars. It is seemingly the diversity and versatility of his sounds that sets him apart from the lot (No Pun Intended), and even after it all uKBZL never forgets the folks who have been brave enough to share in the elavations during sermons in which he has delivered not to forget vibrations. Amongst the galaxy of ingoma which fills his core, KBZL regularly meditates to sounds from far and wide only made with Love, Soul and uJesu.

DICE, whose real name is Mamodise Mailula, is an avid African music loyalist. Having played record vinyls publicly since autumn 2019, her true north is to educate audiences about the richness and trajectory of South African music and culture. Dice and Lerato Lichaba lead Radio Bantu Native to document the evolution and timeline of Southern African sound, an endeavour to narrate the history, societal norms and heritage culture of how local music genres took form.

To honour the contribution of M.E.L.T 2000 in building Madala Kunene's sustainable career in the music industry, we celebrate the birthday of Robert Trunz - label owner and founder of M.E.L.T 2000.
