Tue Apr 5, 18:30 - Tue Apr 5, 20:00

NWU School of Music & Conservatory Hall

ABOUT

Internationally acclaimed concert pianist Megan-Geoffrey Prins presents a solo recital exploring a variety of pianistic soundscapes at the NWU Concert Series on 5 April 2022 at 18:30.

Celebrated for his technical prowess, imaginative interpretation, and captivating sensitivity, Prins has performed throughout the world and won various local and international piano competitions.  In 2019 he was named the Standard Bank Young Artist for Music and he was included in the Mail & Guardian's 200 Young South Africans list in 2021. He serves as full-time piano lecturer on the faculty of the University of Pretoria: School of the Arts.

The program will feature Carl Vine’s monstrous and riveting Piano Sonata, which was penned for the Sydney Dance Company in 1991. It reflects the energetic, driven, and challenging nature of modern dance forms. On a subtler note, Prins will enchant the audience with four preludes by Clade Debussy, including favourites such as Voilles, Les collines d`Anacapri, and La fille aux cheveux de lin (The Girl with the Flaxen Hair). Next on the program is a new work, Ndahamba Ndabuya, by an emerging South African composer based in Stellenbosch. Karl Lobi explores two melodies learned at initiation school in a work that encapsulates his experiences of leaving and returning. The evening will end on a spectacular note with one of Franz Liszt’s most beloved piano works: Mephisto Waltz No. 1. It tells the fiery tale of a devilish fiddler who enchants a wedding party with the intoxicating sounds of his violin.
