ABOUT

DSG is delighted to be partnering with Reach Up South Africa and their Smart School programme. This year, we will deliver a series of carefully curated webinars that cover relevant and thought-provoking topics that will resonate with and appeal to parents and educators alike. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the development of the Loseby Project*.

The second webinar Daring Classrooms will be presented by Julia Kerry Henkel, Dr Brené Brown’s newly Certified Dare to Lead Facilitators™ based on Brown’s global research into the topics of courage, vulnerability and shame in the workplace – one of only 3 in Africa, 200 in the world.

Teachers are some of our most important leaders. We can’t always ask our students to take off the armour at home, or even on their way to school, because their emotional and physical safety may require self-protection. But what we can do, and what we are ethically called to do, is create a space in our schools and classrooms where all students can walk in and, for that day or hour, take off the crushing weight of their armour, hang it on a rack, and open their heart to truly being seen.

*DSG is raising funds to get behind a wonderful and worthwhile initiative that gives our support staff's children, in Grades 4-7, access to Maths and English tutoring from our girls for two afternoons a week. Before hitting the books, the pupils start with a healthy snack, juice, and playtime on the Junior School campus!

Our DSG girls help them with homework, and the staff involved share their expertise and skills. After the lesson is complete, the pupils then get the opportunity to enjoy a sport's session.

We currently have 20 learners and hope to expand this in time; we will also be growing with the Grade 7 group and going up a grade each year until we cater right up to Grade 12. The dream is to immerse the pupils in a holistic programme, where they will engage in further activities such as the President's Awards, competitive sport, outdoor education and community service. The Loseby Project affords those in previously disadvantaged communities an incredible opportunity to gain the tools needed to apply for scholarships that have the potential to change their lives forever and allow them to become a full-time student at DSG.
