In collaboration with Wesgro, we will be hosting a Masterclass on ocean filmmaking, with focus on how to shoot on and under the water. This workshop will feature a number of speakers including filmmakers, free divers and camera specialists who share their experience in big global productions and local or personal projects about the ocean and their journey into it, underwater filming techniques, innovations in camera technology and challenges facing ocean cinematography. Q&A session to follow.



Speakers


Jason Boswell

Jason is an underwater cinematographer and technical diver with 10 years experience working in global film and television. Jason films in a variety of environments and conditions - from the African kelp forests to tropical coral reefs in Asia, caves in northern Namibia, deep wrecks in the Egyptian Red Sea and the offshore canyons of Sodwana Bay at depths exceeding 100m. His work has featured in major productions around the world, as well as at home in South Africa. He worked on the Wild Oceans film Our Oceans, as well as the award-winning documentary short Rise from the Cape Flats, with Shamier Magmoet.


Shamier Magmoet

The director and producer of the short film Rise From The Cape Flats. Shamier never got to explore the ocean when young, but he was fascinated by stories his father recounted of adventures in the ocean, which lived in his imagination. A few years ago at the age of 33, he finally discovered the ocean. He now does everything in his power to advocate for positive change within his community. He is an avid free diver, scuba diver, ocean conservationist and co-founder of the NPO See The Bigger Picture. Shamier invites young and old to come and experience the ocean, Free of charge, at Open Day Snorkel events.


Zandile Ndhlovu

Zandile is the first black freediving Instructor in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. She is also an avid Scuba Diver certified to a depth of 40m and has acquired her Dive Masters certification through PADI. With her passion for the ocean, she founded The Black Mermaid Foundation, which focuses on diversifying career representation in the ocean. Her aim is to grow and learn endlessly about the ocean, educate, spread love for sharks and get more black and brown people into these magical waters. The beauty of the ocean has the power to cast away all fears and build an army of ocean advocates.



Brett Eagle

CEO at Action Distribution South Africa and director of camera firm GDome, Brett Eagle is passionate about action camera technology with a focus on underwater cameras and housings. He has worked with a range of products that service the ocean film industry, and he has seen the evolution in technology accelerate rapidly in recent years, which has seen the recent launch of the world's first universal water housing for DSLR | Mirrorless Cameras that works with almost all brands and cameras and allows for full rear touch functionality. As underwater cinematographers know, this is a game changer.
