Sounds from eSwatini
About
‘Sounds from eSwatini’ features a new trio ensemble made up of sitolotolo (mouthharp) and makhoyane musical bow player Gogo Tfobhi Shongwe, guitarist and vocalist Vusi Sibandze, and pianist and bow player Cara Stacey. Building on the work of the bigger ensemble Bashayi Bengoma, the trio brings forward new arrangements of traditional repertoire and newly-composed Swazi music from Mbabane, Mshingimshingini and eMphini.
These three multi-instrumentalists showcase a series of indigenous instruments from the small country of eSwatini supported by new vocal and guitar arrangements. Especially foregrounded will be the compositions of Gogo Shongwe, a renowned songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist from the north of the country. Gogo’s beautiful and plaintive voice is well-loved across eSwatini and this concert would be a rare opportunity to hear her perform outside of her home country.
