Kurt Stone began playing music, and singing, later in life than most. His first performances were in South Korea, in his late thirties, while he was working there as an English teacher. The bands were composed of expats, as well as some excellent Korean musicians, and the performances were mostly in bars, or at the occasional festival.
He returned to South Africa in 2014 but only began performing again some time later, in 2018. In between stints as a musician, Kurt is also an artist working in pencils, pastel pencils, watercolour and oils. Since 2018 he's played at numerous venues in and around Cape Town.
He calls his particular brand of music "Epic Folk". The word "epic", in this context, is used in the literary sense, to refer to the strong narrative elements in his songs, as opposed to denoting scale.
His vocal style and tone have, variously, been compared to those of Eddie Vedder, Chris Rea, and Leonard Cohen, among others.
