A Brief History
The Starke family name seems to have its origins in Anglo-Saxon or Old English, with the evolution of the name rooted in Norfolk, England. Originally spelt, Stark, it changed to Starke around the 1750's, when Ezekiel Stark married Martha Starke.

The Starke roots can be traced to Little Ellingham, Norfolk, from where John Starke emigrated to South Africa in 1842. On her s arrival, John established a blacksmith and wagon repair shop in Mowbray, Cape Town and married Janefer Shugg in 1851.

In 1861, John returned to farming andpurchased The Old Oak farm. John and Janefer had twelve children, and Joostenberg, Ongegund (renamed, Oatlands) and Mulder's Vlei, were purchased for their sons.

A detailed history of John and Janefer Starke, and their offspring, is chronicled in Starke Saga, written and compiled by Christopher and Luann Waller, 1997 and Familia Starke written earlier.
