16 Kays for 16 Days 2021
16 Kays for 16 Days is an event that runs annually, leading up to the national 16 Days of Activism campaign, to raise funds and awareness for our local Community Intervention Centre (CIC), based at the Tableview SAPS building.
The CIC support the local SAPS (Melkbos, Milnerton & Tableview) Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) as well as Mediclinic Milnerton and Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital. They serve the Blaauwberg Community (Table View, Milnerton and Melkbos) SAPS jurisdiction, which includes Joe Slovo and Dunoon informal settlements. Their core function is to assist victims of crime which may include exposure to - armed robberies, high jacking situations, sexual offences like rape or assault, domestic violence, suicide, attempted suicide, murder, family crisis, death, and severe medical trauma.
The idea to raise funds for them by walking was started by Milnerton local, John Farelo, back in 2014 and he has taken on various challenges over the years, walking different distances each time.
In 2019 we decided to involve other walkers and runners from our community in his initiative and the 16 Kays for 16 Days idea was born.
In 2021 we will be having a one-day event and runners and walkers are invited to join us by choosing to do 8kms or 16kms and coming along on the day to show support for the fight against Gender Based Violence. Entrants do not have to join John on his walk from the Milnerton Lighthouse, so Virtual Entries will be accepted. Anyone choosing to do their distance virtually will just need to send proof of completing their distance to our 16 Kays for 16 Days email address.
Participants are encouraged to take photos of themselves and their friends and family participating in the event and to post them on social media using the #RiseUp and #16KaysFor16Days. They are also encouraged to join our Facebook Group https://web.facebook.com/groups/690415474858456 and to post their photos there or to follow us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/16kaysfor16days/ and tag us in their photos.
This is not a race or competition, so no category prizes will be awarded, but each entrant will receive a special commemorative medal at the end of the event. The aim is purely to raise much needed funding for the CIC and to spread awareness of the upcoming 16 Days of Activism campaign.
