ABOUT
Uitgeskryf: die klimeid se lyf
The politics of being, for womxn, in restricted spaces
This feminist exhibition addresses the silencing of womxn’s voices and the writing out of the black female body. Started initially out of the PhD work of Janine Lange and Cheri Hugo within Women’s and Gender Studies at UWC, the project expanded to include storyteller Esther Englebrecht and photographer Verity FitzGerald. The resulting multimedia works speak to the struggles of insertion and attempted inclusion, the shifting of positionality depending on place and space. Historically, the word ‘meid’ was used to oppress enslaved black females and indigenous women and is still used to disparage black women. But the Nama people use the saying “Klimeid se Lyf” to sing praise and honor a woman's good work; it serves as an affirmation of accomplishments made against all odds. Even though the black female body was written out, we still acknowledge her by saying - Yes, Uitgeskryf - but praise the Klimeid se lyf.
This exhibition is hosted by the the Andrew W. Mellon Funded New Imaginaries for Sexual and Gender Justice, Women’s and Gender Studies, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of the Western Cape.
