Let's Talk Mental Health

Thu Oct 28, 19:00 - Thu Oct 28, 20:30

Event is online

ABOUT

The month of October has been declared Mental Health Awareness month with the objective of not only educating the public about mental health but also to reduce the stigma and discrimination that people with mental illness are often subjected to. In light of this, Potential is Human is kicking off our first community event with a virtual meet-up to open the space to mental health and the role it plays in many of our lives.

Join us for an evening of exploration and discussion as we aim to connect with others who face similar challenges, realise the importance of having a strong support system, and to understand different tools to use in moving with and embracing rather than running from challenging mind-sets.

If this speaks to you in anyway, sign up for a ticket! There are no costs involved. Just your time and energy. We will guide you through the rest.

This meet-up will feature a short talk from Dean Horwitz, Henry Cock and Tracy-Lee Dalton, then there will be some breakaway virtual rooms where we will split into small groups to get more personal and encourage sharing, and we will close off the evening with a guided meditation.

One of our speakers is Henry Cock who is running 133 half marathons in 133 days to raise awareness and funds for mental health. Read more about this incredible feat. below.

DOING IT FOR MENTAL HEALTH

' I was in a bad space last year – my businesses had suffered because of COVID. I lost the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I had illness-related family issues. It all really took it's toll on me. My experience opened my eyes to how prevalent mental health problems are, how few people understand them, and the obstacles people have to face when getting help. Stigma, fear, affordability. They're all very real.

This is the purpose of my run – to raise awareness to the fact that support is out there. To make us talk about it. And of course, to raise upwards of 4 million Rand for The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) who are at the forefront of patient advocacy, education and destigmatisation of mental illness in our country.

They are a non-profit organisation (a registered section 21 company) who provide vital support to thousands of South Africans who live with mental health issues.

They're amazing. You can check them out by clicking here .' - Henry Cock

THE RUN

133 HALF MARATHONS IN 133 DAYS - 8 JULY TO 17 NOVEMBER

I am running 133 consecutive half marathons (21.1km) from Kosi Bay around the coastline to Alexander Bay on the Namibian border. The total distance is around 2800km and includes a combination of trail and road running through some of South Africa's most beautiful and rarest landscapes.
