When thinking of the Baroque Period, composers such as Bach, Vivaldi and Handel are the first to come to mind. The High Baroque dominated the music scene in Europe for the first half of the 18th century, but in fact, it began 100 years earlier.
In this concert, we present some delights from the Middle Baroque period. The music is virtuosic, often over the top and representative of the visual fashions of Europe at the time. This is the period of the Sun King and his Palace at Versailles is probably the most iconic visual feast of the time, demonstrating the frivolity, extravagance and excess of the style. It was also during this period that the Court Composer gained eminence in some respects overshadowing the importance of church composers. It was also during this time that the Concerto Grosso was created, the precursor to the sonati, concerti and symphonies that would come to dominate Classical instrumental music a hundred years later.
Our programme presents a mix of vocal and instrumental music from Italy, Germany, England and France.
