AL-Waagah Institute for the Deaf
About
We have currently raised sufficient funds to secure a previously owned property on the iconic and central Klipfontein Road of the Cape Flats region of the Western Cape Province. The place is easily accessible to many impoverished communities in the city, especially those that were established under the oppressive apartheid legislature and continue to experience socio-economic depravation. The property was previously owned by a community development organization and served the purpose of a convalescent hospital for children. The building has been vacant for a number of years and is therefore in need of renovations and repurposing but the basic structure is well suited to the needs of this project, as shown through current images in the appendix.
We would now like to proceed with raising funds to finalise the purchase of the building and then proceed with repurposing the facility to cater primarily for pre-school or kindergarten leaners in the short term and grow to a primary school in the
near future. The site will also be used for adult education and social support programs. A further long-term plan is to develop a residential block that will cater for twelve to fifteen residents who might be abandoned and wanting of a home that caters for their needs as individuals with various disabilities, assisting them to participate in social activity with a significant degree of independence.
The purchase of the property including the renovations and re-purpose is set at a total of ZAR 7 million. With this proposal, we invite donors to consider partnering with us in financing this essential School for the Deaf through once-off donations or regular monthly contributions. The project also bears naming opportunities for individuals, families, trusts, and organizations to name a classroom, a hall, or housing unit. We trust that you will favorably consider standing with us in building a more inclusive space for our Deaf community in the Western Cape of South Africa. Project Operation The all-inclusive school is envisaged in two phases:
Phase 1: Securing the purchase of a property on Klipfontein Road in the City of Cape Town, previously owned by a social development organization and known as the Sarah Fox Building.
Phase 2: Renovating and repurposing the building as a pre-school or kindergarten all-inclusive school with facilities that provide social support for Deaf individuals. The building will also have a general-purpose hall that would serve as a community facility for the surrounding neighborhood, including administrative offices.
The AL-Waagah team is currently in the process of fundraising for the project and have secured 10% of the total purchase price in order to put down a deposit. The remainder of the purchase price needs to be secured within the next two
months through funding commitments from a host of prospective donors.
A high-level budget for the building may be represented as follows:
Phase 1: Building Purchase In ZAR
Deposit to secure property Raised and paid 700 000
Building Ownership 4 000 000
Phase 2: Building Repurposing
Structural Renovation and Security 1 000 000
Kindergarten Classroom 1 000 000
Common Hall 500 000
Early Childhood Development Equipment 500 000
TOTAL 7 000 000
We therefore call upon potential donors to consider investing in the AL-Waagah All-Inclusive School Project, as a means of demonstrating solidarity with our Deaf community who have for far too long been marginalized and isolated from mainstream social services.
Donations to the project are welcome on various levels:
1) Once-off donations from multiple donors that cumulatively help us reach our funding goal
2) Regular monthly donations
3) Larger donations that allow for a donor to take up naming opportunities on a classroom, hall, or housing unit within the facility.
