ABOUT

Darkroom Contemporary presents their latest evening length dance work - We,the transposed - an innovative new work that finds novel ways of fusing sound and motion. Following their highly acclaimed 2014 production of BLUEPRINT, the company returns to stage this latest work as a site-specific performance at Youngblood Gallery.

This collaboration between Darkroom Contemporary’s Louise Coetzer and sound artist Mischa Mathys, results in a unique installation work. Inspired by the truly multicultural community of peoples settled in Johannesburg, as cultures are transposed from their origins to the city limits, the work questions what it means to “be from” any given place. The sound installation attempts to reconstruct the divergent cultures as they come together to form the single cultural identity that is the City of Johannesburg. Various sampled sound events recorded within the Johannesburg CBD district - each portraying a different part of the City’s identity - form a sonic backdrop, while Darkroom Contemporary constructs movement dialogue in response to the contrapuntal sound composition.
