ABOUT

Musician extraordinaire, multi-instrumentalist, lecturer, mentor and cultural historian, Dizu Zungula Mzikantu Plaatjies is a renowned artist across the African continent and beyond. Having performed with highly acclaimed symphony orchestras around the world and toured with multiple projects across Africa and Europe, his passion, enthusiasm and love for the music and musical instruments, indigenous to the peoples of Africa has made him a celebrated figure within academia and beyond.

His latest recordings, Ibuyambo (2005), African Kings (2008) and Ubuntu — The Common String (2015), under the label Mountain Records, illustrate his knowledge of and interest in the creative possibilities of Indigenous African musics. The last two releases won him SAMA awards. The University of Cape Town affirms, "Dr. Dizu regards his work in communities, educational institutions and with many visiting scholars, as a challenge to the present and future government to respect and conserve the traditional heritage of the people; to see the world through the eyes of the people"

It is a huge privilege to know and be able to have him come and share his wisdom and gift of the art with us at The Commons. Tell your friends and loved ones this evening's performance is one for the books.

?All ticket sales go directly to the musicians. This has undoubtedly been a difficult time for artists globally, your support is so much appreciated.
