La bohème, presented by the Cape Town Opera

Sat Sep 18, 19:00 - Sun Sep 19, 17:00

Oudtshoorn Civic Centre

ABOUT

The CTO presents La bohème as part of the Judith Neilson Cape Town Opera National Tour in association with Klein Karoo Klassique and the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival in Oudtshoorn on the 18th and 19th of September at the heart of the town’s Civic Centre.

The beautiful, yet tragic story of G. Puccini’s La bohème reflects on the bohemian life of a group of young friends – Rodolfo, Marcello, Colline and Schaunard who live together. Marcello and Musetta are ex-lovers who constantly find their way back into each other’s arms, providing a comic counterfoil for the poignant, ill-fated love relationship between Rodolfo and their frail neighbour, Mimì.

This much-loved opera will be brought to life by seven well-known young South African opera singers: Lukhanyo Moyake as Rodolfo, Zandile Mzazi as Mimi, Bongani Kubheka as Marcello, Ané Pretorius as Musetta, Lwazi Dlamini as Schaunard, Conroy Scott as Colline, and Garth Delport as Alcindoro.

South African-born director Magdalene Minnaar will lead the team in this production with designs by Bettina John and lighting design by Stefan Benade. Jeremy Silver serves as Music Director.

Covid-19 alert level rules and regulations will be observed throughout. All audience members must wear a mask at all times.

Only 50 seats are up for grabs as per the current level 3 regulations in place – so be quick to book your ticket.

"Of the thousands of operas in the repertoire, La bohème remains one of the top five most performed works worldwide. We never tire of its youthful energy, its sense of real characters having to make impossible moral decisions, and its music that speaks directly to the heart. The CTO Judith Neilson National Tour presents a chamber music version as passionate and expressive as any piano quintet by Brahms or Dvorák. And the choice to perform it without a chorus and with a reduced instrumentation, is not just for practical purposes. The audiences experience a more direct and equally thrilling performance, where characters come more alive due to their proximity to the public. I am truly delighted and excited to be part of this!"
