ABOUT

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Due to popular demand, we have made our annual Choreographic Competition available to you online to view from the comfort of your own home.

After a somewhat turbulent 2020, the Waterfront Theatre School is proud to present its highly acclaimed Choreographic Competition.  With Covid-19 protocols in place to ensure the safety of our patrons, our students were given the opportunity to showcase their creative prowess once again.

Designed to display some of the college's passionate and innovative student choreographers from 1st year - 4th year, the competition showcases a diverse programme of choreography across a broad range of dance styles, including Musical Theatre, Contemporary, Tap, Jazz and Street Dance.

A team of high-profile choreographers and industry professionals adjudicated the dynamic event.

This year our esteemed judges included award winning choreographer and Figure of 8 Dance Collective co-founder Grant van Ster, internationally recognised dancer, choreographer and agent Lee Sophia Piedt as well as highly acclaimed professional dancer, teacher and choreographer, Gadi Schor.

Award categories include Best Choreographer of a Solo, Trio/Quartet and Group in each genre; Best Novice Choreographer, Best Male and Best Female Choreographer, Most Outstanding Male Dancer, Most Outstanding Female Dancer, Outstanding Overall Performance and the Full House Award that considers full production elements i.e. Music, Casting, Choreography, Costume, and Staging.

Some of our past winners include: Hope Maimane, who has since founded a dance training programme called The Academy and frequently choreographs for the Unity SA Dance Team; London-based Thalia Burt who made her West End Debut at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and went on to perform as Resident Choreographer and Director for the musical Cats; Rushney Ferguson, a Fleur Du Cap Nominated Actress for her performance in David Kramer’s production, Langarm and Sonwabiso Sakuba, who toured in the international production of The Lion King in Spain.

This year our trophies were generously donated and custom made by founder of 'Stucco Italiano', Johan Coetzee, together with his incredible team, Marise Viviers, Piet Abrahams and Francois Jameson. Thank you so much for your wonderful contribution.

And once again, we have to thank our amazing sponsors and WTS parents who really are the true heroes behind the scenes. We couldn't have done it without your immense generosity.

We invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy our Choreographic Competition; showcasing our budding choreographers and creative entrepreneurs of the future!
