Bach Cello Suites by Peter Martens at Old Nectar
Cellist Peter Martens needs no introduction to local audiences. He is principal cellist of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra as well as a prolific chamber musician and soloist. Of his award-winning CDs of the complete Bach Cello Suites, Robin Stowell of the Strad Magazine wrote “Martens’ interpretations are thoughtfully prepared and commendably executed, balancing modern performance practices with the simple clarity of period style.”
Peter is the only South African cellist who regularly gives performances of all six Bach Cello Suites à la Yo-Yo Ma. The well-known prelude of the first suite in G major to the jovial gigue of the sixth in D comprises 36 movements increasing in virtuosity as the musical journey develops. The music itself is sublime and although written 300 years ago, remains the pinnacle of the unaccompanied cello repertoire today.
Peter’s recital will begin at 15:30 on Sunday 27 June in Old Nectar’s historic wine cellar in the Jonkershoek valley, 3.3km from the edge of Stellenbosch. Tickets for this musical treat will include wine and finger food. All proceeds from ticket sales go towards Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch. Because of Covid only 50 tickets will be available. Coffee will be on sale as well. Covid-19 screening and all prerequisite health protocols are required.
We encourage you to come earlier to enjoy the autumn colours in the historic Old Nectar gardens; picnic baskets are welcomed.
