ABOUT
Ethics Workshop presented by Dr Volker Hitzeroth, Medicolegal Consultant and Dr Tony Behrman, Medical Business Consultant, MPS.
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly accelerated the use of telemedicine and became vital in ensuring patients have been able to access clinical care during this time. Although more face to face consultations are now taking place, it is expected that telemedicine will continue to play a more prominent role in the delivery of healthcare in the future.
Telemedicine can offer a streamlined service for both healthcare providers and patients, however alongside this, healthcare practitioners and regulators have legitimate concerns about the potential for medico-legal risks to become more pronounced in the practice of telemedicine.
This workshop will explore some of the medico-legal considerations relating to digital health, telemedicine, and remote consulting, and will offer practical suggestions to put safeguards in place to protect patients and avoid potential medico-legal and regulatory issues arising.
Some of the issues we will explore include:
- The importance of maintaining standards of care due to a lack of visual cues and physical examinations
- Communication issues which can be more challenging remotely including safety-netting and language barriers
- Reducing the risk of adverse outcomes during teleconsulting
- Privacy, confidentiality and security of personal data and medical records
- Adequate verification of the patient and consent issues
- Managing difficult patient interactions including unrealistic expectations
- Case based discussions
