On Tuesday 11 May 2021 at 18:30, Brass Collective, a band of orchestra brass players gone rogue, will present their concert, Brass Sketches, at the NWU School of Music & Conservatory Hall.
Brass Collective is a 5 piece brass band, featuring South Africa’s finest brass players; Phil Cox, Alex Urban (trumpets), Chris Bishop (French horn), Justin Sasman (trombone), and Danél Mecloen (tuba). They will be playing a variety of music from award-winning composers, Hobson (premiere), van Dijk, Parker, Woolfenden and Bernstein. South African composer Andrea Hobson wrote a new work for Brass Collective entitled Sketches. Hobson, now based in Jena (DE), shows her African roots fully in this vibrant rhythmic work. Another South African work, Memoirs of a Clown, by Matthijs van Dijk will be showcased. Van Dijk has earned many accolades, among them the Priaulx Rainer Prize, SAMRO Overseas Scholarship, nomination for Kanna Award. The composer admits that this piece has been performed once before but suggests that this might just be “the premiere of all of the notes”. Rounding out the program, Brass Collective will present works by two British and one American composer: The Golden Section by British Academy Award winner Jim Parker; Full Fathom Five by Guy Woolfended (OBE), and Selections from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein.

Op Dinsdag 11 Mei 2021 om 18:30 bied Brass Collective, 'n koperblaas-ensemble hul konsert, Brass Sketches aan in die NWU Skool vir Musiek & Konservatoriumsaal.
Brass Collective is 'n ensemble wat bestaan uit vyf van Suid-Afrika se top koperblaas-spelers: Phil Cox (trompet), Alex Urban (trompet), Chris Bishop (Franse horing), Justin Sasman (tromboon) en Danél Mecloen (tuba). Die konsert beloof 'n verskeidenheid musiek van bekroonde komponiste soos Hobson (première), van Dijk, Parker, Woolfenden en Bernstein. Die Suid-Afrikaanse komponis Andrea Hobson het 'n nuwe werk vir Brass Collective geskryf met die titel Sketches wat in hierdie konsert première sal word. Nog 'n Suid-Afrikaanse werk, Memoirs of a Clown, deur Matthijs van Dijk word uitgevoer. Van Dijk het al vele eerbewyse verwerf, onder andere die Priaulx Rainer-prys, SAMRO Overseas Scholarship en nominasie vir die Kanna-toekenning. Ter afsluiting van die program, sal Brass Collective werke van twee Britse en een Amerikaanse komponis aanbied: The Golden Section deur die wenner van die British Academy Award, Jim Parker asook Full Fathom Five deur Guy Woolfended (OBE), en Selections from West Side Story deur Leonard Bernstein..
