Schulhoff's Concertino

Sun Apr 11, 16:00 - Sun Apr 11, 17:00

Erin Hall, Rondebosch

ABOUT

Three principal players of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Gabriele Von Dürckheim (flute & piccolo), Petrus Coetzee (viola) and Roxane Steffen (double bass) are coming together to bring you the unexpected, but marvelous music of Erwin Schulhoff playing his Concertino for Flute, Viola and Bass.

Erwin Schulhoff (1894–1942) was a Czechoslovakian musician born in Prague, to a German-Jewish family, and whose life came to a premature end in 1942 at the Wülzburg concentration camp, near Weißenburg, Bavaria. Schulhoff wrote the Concertino in 1925. The first movement begins with an eastern-sounding motto and the flute offering an improvisatory theme as counterpoint. The second movement derives from a Czech folk dance, the furiant. A folk song from the Carpathian Mountains provides the basis for the third movement. In the finale we are treated to another lively folk dance.

Gabriele, Petrus and Roxane will open the concert with a lovely trio by Josef Myslivecek and show their skills in various duos before finishing with the Schulhoff trio.

This concert will not be streamed and will only be able to be heard live at the venue.

Only 40 tickets available due to the size of the hall and Covid 19 restrictions.
