ABOUT
Presented by Associate Professor Emerita Lesley Marx
“Greetings to my fans and followers with gratitude for all your support and loyalty across the years. This is an unreleased song we recorded a while back that you might find interesting. Stay safe, stay observant and may God be with you.” So wrote Bob Dylan—delicately, wryly—for his YouTube revelation, “Murder Most Foul.” He’s always been attuned to the key disturbances of the times and released the full album, Rough and Rowdy Ways, on June 19th, 2020 in the midst of an especially apocalyptic moment. “He sings,” writes Rolling Stone, “in a voice that’s out of time, like the sardonic ghost sifting through the wreckage of the 20th century on ‘Desolation Row.’” While June 19th is loaded with meaning, the entire album cross-references swaths of history, popular culture, literature, and more.
On the occasion of his 80th birthday, this 2-hour lecture—illustrated with video and song clips—will explore some of the mesmerising ways in which Dylan redeems our time.
