Sunday 13 December - 6PM

Searching Sirocco
World | 2015 | 6:18 | Directed by Brett Novak

Pro skateboarder Kilian Martin is teleported between city, salt pan, snow and sand. But he doesn’t just skate through the Moab desert, he “emblematically paints over the landscape canvases in perfect strokes, guiding his board as a brush”. Then he “delivers a seamless blend of acrobatic poise, symbiotic movement and raw talent”. Bruuuuu. Hand me the bong.

Headache
Northern Europe | 2015 | HD | 47 min | Directed by Felix Gänsicke

All African premier

Brrrrrr. What is it with these frigid surf flicks from frozen lands? Is it that Slaapstad surfers need to feel better about our exposure to the icecream headaches of our icy summer waters?. The Binsurfen crew leave their girlfriends (who would want to go with them?) to explore the coldest corners of icy Europe to pioneer coldwater surfing from Denmark to Iceland; from Scotland to some other freezing spot. These Germans are crazy! Achtung mit der frost bite!

The Wave I Ride
Maui | 2015 | HD | 60 min | Directed by Devyn Bisson

Maui’s Big Wave Ambassador Paige Alms has aloha in her soul and fire in her eyes. With one of the world’s best big wave surf spots in her backyard, it was inevitable that she would learn to slide some mountains. In 2014, Paige was nominated for the Billabong XXL Women’s Performance Award after successfully paddling Jaws. Heart-warming tale of a humble heroine who is not afraid to tame the sea monsters.

Sunday 13 December - 8PM

Ocean Gravity
Tiputa Pass | 2015 | HD | 3:39 min | Directed by Guillaume Néry & Julie Gautier

As the name suggests, we go weightless in the underwater world of wistful weirdness. There is no top. There is no bottom. There is no upside down or inside out. Hell, there ain’t even a Heaven. Down here on the perimeter, there are no stars. Down here, we is stunned immaculate - a human satellite floating in a vast cosmos. Sur et à l’extérieur!

No Regrets
South Africa | 2015 | HD | 20 min | Directed by Jason Hearn

This moving doccie features former wunderkind Ricky Basnett’s journey back to surfing after losing eight years of his life to the bottle. Filmmaker Jason Hearn expertly tracks Ricky’s process of redemption using visceral cinema techniques, such as vivid chiaroscuro and grayscale shots, to add a richness to Ricky’s tale of flow.

Bear Island
Bear Island | 2014 | HD | 82 min | Directed by Inge Wegge

From the Nordic makers of North of the Sun, three brothers mission to the remote Norwegian island of Bjørnøya and turn the severe, wind-swept landscape into an extreme sports playground. Funny accents aside, this is no languorous cinematic meander like Ingmar Bergman was accused of, but a quirky quest across cliff and crevice. We are pulled along for the ride as they shred Arctic powder and slide the icy blue yonder.
