ABOUT

Don't Call Me Moses presents "Folk, Rock & Frocks" featuring Laurie Levine, Josie Field, Auriel Lefebre and Jae Braun

Join us for another fun evening celebrating these talented female musicians.

The idea behind this event...
As a music lover and regular concert and festival goer the issue of gender inequality in the music scene not only in South Africa but all around the world has recently been brought to my attention. In the past this was something that didn't even cross my mind, going to festivals and watching predominately male acts was just the norm. Once I realised it, it was so obvious to me. I am passionate about both music and women and providing a platform for the recognition of female artists is the driving force behind this event and what we hope will be many more.

Artists
Laurie Levine and Josie Field
Dubbed ‘Best Collaboration of the Year’ in 2013, winners of the Standard Bank Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival in 2014 and now South African Music Award Nominees for ‘Best Adult Contemporary Album of the Year’ for their band new release ‘Tigerlily’ - its clear that Josie Field and Laurie Levine are no ordinary folk duo.

‘Tigerlily’ is a rich blend of Josie Field’s deep, soulful blues tones with Laurie Levine’s velvet honey country inflections, with a strong focus on their elegant harmonies. Their collaboration is the first of its kind for two female South African singer songwriters

Auriel Lefebre
Auriel Lefebre is a singer-songwriter from Gauteng who spends most of her time playing drums for Cortina Whiplash and fighting boredom...and patriarchy. In her early 20s she performed with Afrikaans femme punk rock band Rokkeloos; got chased out of several small towns and taken to the broadcasting complaints commision for vulgar language on air. The band brought out a single album, ‘Nooiensvaart’ on Paul Riekert’s One-F lable and pissed off many folks including their own mothers, but also changed how women and young Afrikaners expressed themselves in the pre-Fokofpolisikar, pre-Jack Parow era.

For most of the 2000s she performed with folk-rock act Ménage à Trois, grew dreadlocks, released an album, ‘These are Birthmark’ and toured extensively. After six years it was still impossible for anyone to pronounce this band name and new adventures beckoned, so she cut off the dreads and got behind a drum kit.

Learning to play the drums meant less time on the guitar and a couple of years went by while it collected dust in the corner. Life happened and so there were things to write about. This year, Auriel returns to the singer-songwriter stage.

Jae Braun
No stranger the to the Cape Town music scene, Jae is back with renewed energy and some more poetic stories to tell. A heady mix of bluesy rock n roll, all told through her original music and lyrics and maybe a cover or two.
