1956-1959 Argus Group: Trained as a journalist with the Argus Group in what was then Rhodesia, serving as a reporter in Salisbury, Bulawayo and Ndola.


1959-63: Literary Officer, Southern Rhodesia African Literature Bureau, Information Officer, Matabeleland (responsible for communicating Government policy mainly in rural areas) Senior Information Officer, Press and Radio (responsible for liaison with local and overseas media)


1963-72 Public Relations Executive, Lindsay Smithers advertising agency in Johannesburg. Manager and a director of LS Public Relations.


1972-1989: Senior Partner in D Hilton-Barber Associates, Public Relations consultancy in Johannesburg with wide range of clients in public and private sector. 


President of PRISA 1972/3. Past chairman of the PR Consultants Association and a Council member of the PR Council, the governing body of the profession. Council member for RSA on the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) , attended congresses in London, Geneva, Madrid and Amsterdam; lectured to students at Technikons and Colleges, assisted in the compilation of the communications course at UNISA.


1989 – Present

Author of non-fiction historical works and Publisher (Footprint Press)
