Urban Village
Documentary
When you have never known your village of origin, how do you find your roots?
That's a question that the number of urban youth populating the suburbs of large cities are preparing sooner or later. In South Africa, high-speed urbanization that began over a century ago continues, with rural people continuing to fertilize the city, mixing with it to fuel a quirky urban culture.
For the four musicians of Urban Village, who have known only their gigantic township of Soweto, these traditional roots hidden by buildings and concrete are the source of their music.
And well beyond, their quest for an identity that would reconcile the past and the present, to invent a future that corresponds to them. Xolani, Simangaliso, Lerato and Tubatsi take us, to the sound of their music, in search of these roots, their history, and the hectic daily life that makes Soweto a broth of life and culture.
