ABOUT

TICKETS FOR THE 2016  NEW YEAR EVENT WILL BE AVAILABLE HERE FROM MID SEPTEMBER.2016

Thanks for deciding to come to Learning Man. Please read the "Learning Manual" so you know what the ethos is, what to expect and what is expected, how to participate, what to bring etc. www.learningman.co.za/the-learning-manual

BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR TICKET
You will need to sign up on the Community Exchange .  It's quick and easy and free and is a great tool for being able to trade without money before, during and after the festival.
Go to www.ctte.org.za (if you live in Cape Town) or www.ces.org.za  and Sign up.
You will be asked what your offering  could be. This does NOT have to be the same as the offering you bring to the event, just some way you can offer a service to the greater community in order to earn talents.  It can even be the sale of something you own. (You dont have to have a talent.) You will receive a number which you must enter above when you buy your ticket.
There are many exchanges all over the world, so join the one closest to the where you live. All exchanges can trade freely with each other.

WE WILL NOT BE SELLING TICKETS AT THE GATE
PLEASE TRY AND SIGN UP ON THE COMMUNITY EXCHANGE BEFORE YOU COME.  (its easy and free)

  • Fresh abundant delicious mountain drinking water
  • Good toilets and hot showers
  • Hills, forests, dams and rivers to explore, walks and cycle tracks
  • An opportunity to share your skills, goods and services

  • Live music stage, drumming, awesome sound rig, and dancefloor
  • A children’s area with educational and fun activities
  •  Access to the growing number of talks, documentaries, workshops, demonstrations, art, crafts, entertainment being offered by participants, for which we reward each other for value received using the talent exchange,. Not money..
  • A unforgettable New Year celebration with a difference.
  • The opportunity to have a very inexpensive affordable, entertaining, learning and worthwhile holiday with friends and family
  • A platform to shine at what you do best !

PLEASE NOTE

  • The price is the same whether you attend for the whole week or for one day
  • Those who would like to participate but cannot afford the ticket price and cannot pay for their ticket in Talents, can apply for a discount
  • Conscious camping and contributionism is key –  leave no trace, offer help where needed, do no harm, random acts of kindness, that kind of thing :)

WHAT TO BRING

  • The idea is to come completely self-sufficient to camp for a week except for water. Lots of good drinking water
  • Camping gear, cooking and cooling equipment
  • Decor and comforts to deck out your 'home for a week' - lets make a beautiful village!
  • Please make sure your soaps, shampoos, cleaning liquids are all biodegradable and toilet paper is 1 ply preferably unbleached.
  • Your own food, drinks, snacks etc.  Generally it is a self-catering event, so bring whatever you need for cooking and washing. If food is your thing you are welcome to offer meals for Talents.
  • Your own bowl, cup, spoon (to be used at food traders too – think minimal waste, no paper plates or cups)
  • Reusable water bottle – good, healthy, tested, drinking water is freely available
  • Bicycle (optional but great place to cycle)
  • A portable camping chair to bring to the talks
  • Trash bags and preferably three small bins for recycling your waste into compostable, recyclable and trash. De-package food products beforehand to reduce waste (you may put your compostable material on the compost heap at the venue, but please remove all your recycling and trash with you when you leave)
  • Flyscreen or net to cover food, there is a dairy farm nearby and sometimes there are flies about
  • If you are a smoker please do not throw your butts around. Responsible smokers make a habit of putting their butts into a vial. (That’s an idea for someone to trade)
  • A pen a notebook for important information. There will be a wealth of ideas and great people to meet so be ready to network and bring business cards, etc.
  • The tools of your trade and whatever you need for your stall, signage, lighting and decoration, materials, tables, chairs
  • Your CTTE account number and your password.    It is important to join up beforehand so you can start to become accustomed to the system. Don't worry, it's really easy ! Teenagers should either have their own or an adult’s CTTE number allocated to them on which they can earn Talents and make purchases.  If you absolutely can't manage to sign up, you can sign up on your smartphone at the event using 3g. But there is no wifi.

WHAT NOT TO BRING

  • noisy petrol generators - silent ones on biodiesel are ok
  • excess packaging and waste,
  • products with toxic chemicals
  • loud music systems
  • dodgy attitudes

SOME IDEAS

  • Friends can camp together and share resources, meals, washing space
  • Your clan can have a theme camp offering anything from a relaxing space, learning how to do something,  knowledge on something you’re an expert at, a coffee bar or breakfast cafe.. Anything at all to add to the village vibe. Anything goes, as long as it’s empowering
  • If you are an expert in any useful practical skill, offer a talk or workshop or demonstration
  • If you have good knowledge, do a presentation, call a panel discussion
  • If you can build, get on the building team, we are hoping to build a Temple out of local resources.
  • Green fingers?  offer a workshop on growing
  • Renewable Energy expert, sponsor the use of few solar panels for lighting?
  • It is not mandatory to bring an offering, you are still welcome to come and enjoy everyone else's.
GET IN TOUCH
  • If you'd like to volunteer your time and energy, just send us an email, help is always needed
  • Any offering that needs a time slot at the event, email us and we will allocate one so that it gets onto the programme
