Morgan's Medical Expenses

About

Morgan is a kind and easy-going 17-year-old teenager, yet he has faced and continues to face many challenges in his life. The most pressing matter is his diagnosis of severe Ulcerative Colitis in 2020. After two extended hospital stays, his condition has not responded to traditional treatments such as steroids, immunosuppressant medications, antimicrobials, and anti-inflammatory agents. As a last resort, his specialist has recommended medications called biologics. Unfortunately, these medications are not covered under his current health insurance (medical aid) plan. But it is necessary that he receive treatment (3 treatments for 2020) and on an ongoing basis every 8 weeks for 2021 to see if inflammation and bleeding can be stopped. Without this treatment, Morgan could face surgery to have his colon removed. Unfortunately, these medications are very expensive and are out of reach for his family.

Morgan's family has faced economic hardship. His family needs financial support to help to pay for his treatment and other expenses associated with his condition. Morgan and his family live in South Africa. His mother lost her job as a geologist in 2017, due to the economic downturn in South Africa, and the shrinking mining industry. She has been unable to find work for the last 2 years. Her husband during this time was also without work and so in desperation, he went to the United Kingdom to find work to help to support his family. He has managed to find an entry-level job in the UK and sends all the funds that he can back to South Africa to support his family. Unfortunately, he is also not in a position to pay for the desperately needed medication. He returns to South Africa once a year to visit his wife and two sons (Morgan and Colby).

Morgan's situation is heartbreaking to me. He is battling a Chronic Disease with so much uncertainty and without his father. Having some financial assurance that his medications and treatment can be paid for will be a blessing to him and his family.

The funds raised by this page will be used to pay for the biologics infusions for 2020 (each treatment costs $1170.64 OR R 17 871.60). Funds will also be used to pay outstanding doctors and hospital costs, and to fund an upgrade of Morgan's health insurance plan (medical aid) in 2021.  His parents are not in a position to pay anything extra for health insurance (his medical aid), but the upgrade will ensure that his treatment should be covered in 2021.

I want to thank you for taking the time to read about Morgan's story. Any donation will help and no donation is too small to make a difference. I know he will be blessed by everyone's compassion and kindness, and with the right treatment, will hopefully avoid major surgery to remove his colon, which would be life-altering for a young man.

Thank you all for your consideration and generosity.
