Piet Byleveld was an old-school policeman, dedicated and thorough. He is now retired. The biography focuses on his career by Hanlie Retief makes for fascinating reading. It is almost like a time warp, recalling the days of “Squad Cars” where the successes of the police force were told to an admiring audience. Only admirers listened to the programme. Sadly the police force doesn't have that many success stories today. We need more men and women with Byleveld's determination.
His speciality was serial killers, but before that he did the “ordinary” murders. He cautions people not to enter into wage disputes with domestic servants. Apparently a lot of domestic murders are a result of wage disputes.
Serial killers, of course, tend to be high profile cases. Even people who don't follow the crime pages know about the serial killers. The Kranskop murders, the Nasrec killings, the Wemmerpan murders, the Jeppe hammer murders, the Bruma Lake killings, the Rhodes Park murders, the crossbow murder, the Leigh Matthews and the Shedean Human killings.
The fact that he only ever failed to get one conviction, the crossbow murderer, and only then because his witnesses let him down at the last moment, indicates that he was a cop who did his work thoroughly and could not be bought, although he tells of offers of bribes.
He answers a question. Yes, he does have a feel, a gut feel, an instinct for who is and who is not guilty. Another question. Yes, he does think that the death penalty is the only appropriate sentence in some cases.
It is the sleuth that is the hero. So much so that Scotland Yard and the FBI have consulted him for assistance with their cases.
