ABOUT

The music lives on – despite social distancing!

This year, the South African National Youth Orchestra’s annual Advent Concert will be held exclusively online – and for the first time ever it will be presented in partnership with Klein Karoo Klassique and the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK). The South African National Youth Orchestra (SANYO) will be performing a programme of baroque music perfectly suited to this time of the year as we countdown to Christmas – and you can enjoy the music in the comfort of your own home.

“It is a privilege to be able to perform at all during this period,” says Managing Director of SANYO, Sophia Welz. “To us this concert is a beacon of hope as well as a showcase of our pride in our country, our young musicians and the arts.”

Every ticket sold will contribute towards helping SANYO carry on their wonderful work, says KKNK Artistic Director, Hugo Theart. “Like many other performing arts organisations, SANYO too had a tough 2020. We believe it is important to support young talent.”

Works performed during the online concert of 45 minutes, include Gaudete (unknown), Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (JS Bach), Sinfonia to Cantata no.29 (JS Bach) and Sinfonia V from Six Symphonies en quatuor, contenant les plus beaux Noëls Francois et étrangers (Michel Corrette). For the first time in 57 years, it will not be the full orchestra gathering for the performance; instead, a smaller ensemble will bring you the music.

The members of the ensemble are Gilah Kellner (violin), Jason Oppelt (violin), Kamohelo Moshoaliba (viola), Vaughan McLea (cello), Kyle Smith (double bass) and John Reid Coulter (harpsichord).

This concert is made possible by the generous support of the SAMRO Foundation, Friends of Orchestral Music Cape Town, and the Academy of Sound Engineering.

The concert will be available for viewing from 20 December at 18:00 up to and including 31 December at midnight.

Once purchased your tickets, you will receive a link you can use to stream the concert on a device of your choice.
