YOUNG DIRECTORS: DISCOVERING THE AFRICAN AESTHETIC THROUGH ANIMATION

calendar
Tue Oct 27, 16:00 - Tue Oct 27, 17:30

About

The animation industry in Southern Africa is bursting with talented animators and digital creatives. Animation programmes produce some of the best animators in the world, but like other sectors in the Digital Creative sector the Animation industry is lacking in a robust supporting infrastructure of directors, producers and distribution support.

The aim of this panel is to not only unpack how and why the Animation industry can be served better, but will highlight some of the key players working to shift this narrative. The panel asks: What programs exist that try to close the gap in supporting intermediary talent in Direction and Production? How can creative industries funding structures better serve the development of the industry and not just individual creatives?

The panel will start with a presentation by Tshimologong Development Studio’s inaugural Young Directors Programme: Directors Bokang Koatja and Jeani Varty with a premier screening of their short films developed over the last 7 months and talk on the motivations and innovations in African aesthetics in this work.

This will be followed by a close discussion with Tshimologong Development Studio’s Director Lesego Vorster, alongside the other panelists exploring the opportunities and importance of training and development of intermediary supporting talent for a robust African animation industry.
