In the development of the African digital creative sector Fak'ugesi Festival found there to be big gap in the number of professionals acting to support the digital arts: curators, producers and general advocates for the meeting of culture and technology on the continent.

In response an exciting new programme was started in 2020 - a Digital Art Curators Bootcamp and an associated Exhibition Commission. From 141 bootcamp applicants, commissions were granted leading to five extraordinary online feature exhibitions in our 2020 Online Festival.

Join us as we celebrate these and explore the exhibitions commissioned and curated for Fak'ugesi Festival Online 2020.

• PEOPLE OF PLAY: African Game Developers curated by Games Industry Africa founder and writer Vic Bassey to celebrate and bring attention to key players in the African Games Industry (opens 2 Nov)
• Time, the Earth, and Death are Living Things, as Stories are curated by Elisabeth Efua Sutherland (Ghana) in the tradition of the Griot in the lens digital narratives.
• #DearUs, Matric 2020 by Faye Kabali-Kagwa (South Africa / Uganda) is a WhatsApp based exhibition that speaks to the lives of 6 South African teenagers living through a global pandemic at what should be the pinnacle of their schooling career.
• Misava curated by Nkhensani Mkhari (South Africa) is a cosmogram of eight regional & international digital artists focused on digital healing.
• Spatial Fabrications: An Uninhabitable World developed by local and Soweto based Pre-Empt Group Collective (South Africa) provoke conflict around everyday experiences and refusal to let things remain the same.
• AFRIDELIC: trip a digital world is an other worldly exhibition experienced on instagram & facebook camera filters only, in the Vaperwave sub-genre Afridelic. Curated with Xopher Wallace (South Africa) working with anonymous Joburg artist VonMash.

The Fak'ugesi Digital Art Curatorial Bootcamp and commissions are supported by the South African Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, National Arts Council of South Africa, Gauteng Film Commission, Pro Helvetia Johannesburg and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), French Institute of South Africa and Arts Research Africa of the Wits School of Arts.
