Latitudes Online describes Die Noute/The Narrowing: Artist Hannelie Coetzee combines her love for stone and asking questions. How do we interact with nature, something from which we are so far removed? What will drive us to alleviate the effects of climate change? How can we design cities to work with nature, and not against it? To interrogate these questions, Hannelie went to the mountain, well, to a white granite koppie in the Kalahari. She chose a 100-ton off-cut from the quarry and brought the mountain to Joburg. She then reconstructed it into 90 pillars on William Nicol Drive.

John Grande describes Muse ll, 'With what can only be called poetic utility, Coetzee’s public art engages a principle of near invisibility, quiet integration of public art. The artist initiates a gentle, less aggressive approach to public art engaging with a mutualist understanding of the exchange between artist and living ecology. Composed of 6,000 colourful living succulents growing in PhNeutral anti-bacterial concrete holders, a large-scale image of a face resembling pixelated imagery becomes a living phenomenon. Looking out without prejudice, hopeful and full of expectation into an open environment, Coetzee’s Muse II  is a symbol of change, in a world where climate change and Covid 19 cause us to redesign the ways we generate energy, provide shelter and produce food for the future.
