TRIbe4Logwood "Embracing People, Embracing Life" 1km at a time through my Ironman races...

Having completed my first Ironman 70.3 in 2014, I decided to turn my attention to competing in both the 2016 Ironman 70.3 & Ironman African Championships.

As the big brother of my little sister, Sally-Anne Couchman who continues to have a profound and positive impact on our family and who is unconditionally cared for and loved by the incredible staff and carers of Logwood Village, I needed and wanted to answer a burning question!

So with this in mind and as I embark on my Ironman journey, I will be pushing my mind & body to the absolute limit of endurance and all this for my own personal achievement….mad some might say but what is the purpose to all this, as it can & must be bigger than my achievement!!

I was able to answer this very quickly and with absolute conviction and the answer is simple…. my purpose is Sally-Anne & the benefactors can only be her carers, fellow residents and friends at Logwood Village.

For those of you don’t know about the Ironman below are some quick facts, as well a link to the respective websites.

LOGWOOD VILLAGE

A Short History of Logwood Village

A Short History of Logwood Village

  • Logwood Village has its genesis in the Sunfield Homes Association, which established a small home in a Magaliesberg farmhouse in 1954 on the initiative of a number of parents. With a growing reputation for the proficient manner in which it cared for its first residents, the Association’s work expanded fast.
  • As a result of wide interest by parents of children with an intellectual disability it became necessary by 1955 for the Sunfield Homes Association to buy larger premises – Greendale Farm in Howick, KwaZuluNatal.
  • This became the Mother Home as additional properties were bought in different parts of the country to fulfill the demand for additional homes for people with intellectual disabilities. As the years passed, new Sunfield Homes were established in KwaZuluNatal, Western Cape, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.
  • Logwood came into being in 1986 with the purchase of a property by the Sunfield Association. Its first 10 residents entered the doors of their new home in January 1987.
  • Management fell under the jurisdiction of the board of governors of the Sunfield Association until 1996, when the first elected management board of Logwood took over the running of the home. In April of that year all responsibility for running Logwood passed to the new management board, and Logwood became fully autonomous. The Sunfield Homes Association was disbanded.
  • Logwood continued to develop its premises on a spacious 18-hectare farm in Nooitgedacht, north west of Johannesburg. In 2003 the organization embarked on a transition strategy to develop its position into one of the most vibrant organizations of its kind.
  • In 2005 Logwood Village was adopted as the official name, and launched its new corporate identity with its telling tagline, “ Embracing People, Embracing Life” to reinforce its commitment as a progressive organisation that provides optimal independence for the adults in its care and the community in which it works.

Residential Centre

  • Permanent residence for adults;
  • Respite care for short-term placements; and
  • Contract work in a protective workshop, laundry & domestic service, clerical work, deliveries, learning computer skills, etc.

Amongst other things Logwood Village offers the following residential and work opportunities for people with an intellectual disability which include:

They care for one another a lot. And they care for those who look after them too, because they do it with the dignity and love that those who established and manage Logwood show them. They care this way so that residents reach their full potential. As you’ve guessed, it’s called Logwood Village. It is here that the residents live in 12 self-contained cottages.

That they are intellectually disabled should, well, be hardly worth noting. But of course we must, since we are sharing with you, our reader and supporter, just a little about our home. Why not? After all, that’s their outlook on life: enjoy the wonder of creation and be happy. And fill the world with love.

Infectious. Enthusiastic and all-embracing. That’s the people of Logwood Village near Johannesburg. Here, in spacious grounds, 85 people from varying backgrounds, joyfully, if sometimes a little loudly, welcome you into their midst.

Community and Social Development

Community and Social Development

  • It offers the opportunity of employment to people in the neighbouring communities. Annually the workshop ploughs back +/- R800 000 to these communities.
  • It encourages productivity, stimulation and a sense of worth for residents who, at the end of their happy toil, earn an income for themselves.
  • To assist in the sustainability of Logwood Village itself.
  • Contracts with several businesses.
The workshop fulfils several purposes:The protective workshop is a veritable buzz of productivity, where residents meticulously labour over the greatest detail, and complete their work with pride - and the simple determination to succeed in the face of life’s vicissitudes. Members of the community also work here, since it offers an opportunity for impoverished folk from the surrounding areas to earn an income. This partnership has produced a vibrant workforce of both disabled and disadvantaged people.

Situated in the heart of an area in which there are several impoverished communities, Logwood Village offers the use of its infrastructure and facilities, where relevant, to people living nearby.

A positive demeanour, combined with a progressive commitment to an optimal quality of life, is catchy. Our residents work happily with anyone who will work with them – and so do all in our village. At Logwood that includes members of the broader community.

Sport & Recreation

Sport & Recreation

  • The Country Festival is the organisation's brand building event & a fun day for the whole family.
  • The Charity Race Day is a great corporate horse racing event that takes place in either August or September.
  • The Village participates in Casual Day, every first Friday of September, and is a beneficiary of this national initiative.
  • Annual cycling events include “The Logwood Classic” mountain bike race that has received provincial status and is run by the Johannesburg Mountain Bike Club in July.
  • The Anniversary Golf Day takes place in March and is a great day out for business people and corporate companies.

Armed with nothing but their determination and a commitment to be the best they can be, Logwood’s residents are intrepid participants in many sporting activities that include ten-pin bowling, ice skating and floor hockey. Also, over the years Logwood Village residents have completed both the 94.7 and Cape Argus Cycle races, the comrades marathon and other road running events.

Consistent with the commitment to give residents a sense of pride and achievement, Logwood residents also participate in other organised activities such as ten-pin bowling, ice skating, horse-riding and, arts and crafts.

And just to ensure that the community stays abreast of what Logwood Village has to offer, annual fundraising events attract a wide variety of people to its doors.

The joy of living as a family in a village satisfies the soul. The satisfaction of achievement through participation in the work of Logwood is good for the mind. But to keep bodies healthy and fit Logwood Village provides a busy slate of recreational activities. Often these are spontaneously organised by the residents with an enthusiasm that defies description. There are really no losers. For everyone who participates in Logwood is a winner.
