ADDRESS AND PARKING
The address is “The Reservoir”, No 1 Dressage Close Constantia. NB The entrance is on Spaanschemat River Road, and our house is on the corner.
Parking will be outside our gates, but we will have a car guard keeping watch.
Spaanschemat River Rd runs past a big open field between Firgrove Rd and Dressage Close. There will be space to park off the road between Nova Constantia Rd and Dressage Close. There isn’t a pavement, so you can simply turn off the road and park under the trees, on the same side of the road as our house. The guard will be able to point you in the right direction.
ARRIVAL TIME - 6pm will be great, for the music to begin at 6.45pm
This will give everyone time to settle in, socialise a bit, and find a seat . Seating is not reserved, so it’s good to arrive early. We can seat 60 people in chairs and sofas, and squeeze in a few more on cushions if necessary!
The music will start about 45 mins after people arrive, and there will be 2 sets lasting about 40/45 mins. There will be a 20 minute interval .
NB We recommend that you bring a cushion to sit on, because most of the chairs are wooden and not padded.
From the far side of one of South African's many cultural divides come two fabled exponents of new Afrikaans music. Les Javan is a classically-trained master guitarist whose career took an unexpected turn when he was appointed director of Solms Delta's pioneering rural music project in the Cape winelands, a position which led to Javan's rediscovery of the music of his own rural childhood. Rian Malan is an author and journalist whose late-life digression into music resulted in an acclaimed solo album titled Alien Inboorling and a string of hits songs written for the Radio Kalahari Orkes, actor Ian Roberts' noveau-vastrap band.
Earlier this year, these broers put together a show for the Oppi Koppi rock festival. Here at The Reservoir they'll be performing a variation on the same theme, which is to say, a selection of exquisitely-observed Javan songs about hard times and high hopes on Cape wine farms interspersed with Malan's satirical "songs of socio-political import" and an occasional outbreak of the unruly dance music known as vastrap, a genre to which both musicians are devoted.
Here are some links to their music.
