An abstract of the discussion:

The Ditsong Museums of South Africa institution is the custodian of eleven historic sites. These sites all contain historic buildings, buildings older than 60 years and some older than 100 years. The institution is under obligation of the National Heritage Resources Act to manage these sites and buildings according to and within the limits and potential of its ‘cultural significance’. Three of these sites contain buildings that cannot be considered urban types neither are they associated with ‘formally’ designed buildings but are classified as buildings of a vernacular tradition. In order to determine the ‘cultural significance’ of each of these buildings, it became inevitable that they had to be compared with each other and with other farm dwellings of the same period and in the region. Such a comparison eventually had to expose commonalities, patterns, unique aspects and eccentric aspects expressing the variation in types and variations within each type.
